It should also be noted that *history* plays a role in choosing names.

"Ford" is an American company in the sense that the Model T was first
built in America, but now many Ford parts and assemblies come from
Japan. So is Ford committing a 'sin' because they still call
themselves "American"? And vice versa, most of us have seen Toyota's
recent advertisements about their factories being here in the U.S. Is
it still 'legitimate' to call Toyota a Japanese car?

Names persist. If you are willing to say that there was once a
"German" clarinet sound (which Dan may not be willing to do, I
understand this), then perhaps there's nothing wrong with a clarinet
manufacturer using the name.
