Klarinet Archive - Posting 000045.txt from 2005/03
From: "John D. Stackpole" <jstackpo@-----.org> Subj: [kl] Spoofed Viral Messages Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 15:18:09 -0500
What sometimes happens is that somebody - you probably will never know
who - has Dan's e-mail address in his computer, in an address book.
That "somebody's" machine is then successfully attacked by one virus
or another which then sends the same virus to lots of (if not all) the
people in the address book, AND uses a (random) address from that same
address book as the "From:" address. That's called "spoofing", as I
am sure many reading this know.
'Taint Dan's doing at all, indeed he may never even know it happened.
Until people start sending HIM messages complaining that he, Dan, sent
them a virus.
I get virus carrying messages like that from time to time, sometimes
from people I know, other times from unknown people. And "second
order" "You sent me a virus, you dirty rotten ---" messages too.
Just ignore them - it is all part of our modern times.

Don't know what Norton Anti-virus is catching, but it isn't from the
Klarinet list - any posts with attachments or encoded parts are
rejected.
