That is a particularly thoughtful and well reasoned analaysis of
the issues involved. I would suspect that the vast preponderance
of what we have discussed on this board falls under the umbrella
of instrumentation; i.e., the substitution of one or more
instruments not specified by the composer in place of those that
are. But there is the added issue of pitch which I thought was
very correctly included in his argument.

For example when I used to play string quartets on clarinets, not
only did we alter the instrumentation (and therefore the
composer's presume choice of character of sound), we also read
the music in the key written, which automatically put it in
another key entirely.

His argument about which of the many things related to music are
alterable by the performer is very well thought out.

That he moves the issue from transcription to one of
compositional identity is particularly thoughtful.
