Bit of a straw man, isn't it, Dan?--because nobody suggested a combination
of instruments anywhere near that bizarre. I agree with your general
principle that it's best to play music on the instruments the composer
intended. I strongly disagree that playing music on the available
instruments (the wrong instruments) indicates that someone doesn't much
care about music. It may simply indicate that someone can't afford to buy
a custom-made basset horn, and cares too much about the music to stop
playing it and learning from it because of money. With all the attention
given today to performing with as much authenticity as possible, I think
Mozart's music will survive if even if some people do the best we can with
the instruments we've got. You can wait to eat until you're served the
perfect dinner on the perfect china, with the perfect silverware, too, and
you can wait until you starve to death. I don't want to waste the rest of
my life *waiting* to learn great music.
