Subj: [kl] RE: Legere-friendly Mouthpieces

I just thought I'd drop a word in about a recent (actually still ongoing)
experience. I recently had Walter Grabner send me a couple of his K11
mouthpieces to try. I played on them at a rehearsal of the Beethoven Eroica
the other night and was very pleased. Very responsive and they produce a
very attractive tone quality. Then, on Saturday, I played a first rehearsal
of a production of On the Town that is running through this week. For pit
work I've used Legere reeds on my auxiliary instruments almost since they've
been available to avoid dry reed problems when an instrument sits unused and
then has to produce instant beauty with no time to re-wet the reed. I've
never found synthetic reeds comfortable, though, on Bb clarinet, so I've
made do with wetting the reed during rests and whatnot - sometimes just
putting up with a partially dry reed until the next big chunk of dialog
comes along.

I discovered over this weekend, though, that the #4 Legere I've had in my
desk drawer for over a year actually plays quite well on the K11. I played a
full run-through last night with Legeres on both my bass and my Bb. Tone
quality and intonation are very comparable to what I could produce on a cane
reed and the embouchure adjustments and humoring that are needed to play a
reed that's begun to dry were of course completely unneeded. I'm very happy
with the result and will play all-synthetic for the rest of the run.

Since this topic was recently discussed on Klarinet, I thought I'd mention
my experience. The Grabner K11 is for me Legere-friendly.

FWIW,

Karl Krelove
