Many a jazz clarinet player played on crystal mouthpieces in the mid-60's.

I would presume that is by manufacturer's choice. Few jazz players play
crystal mouthpieces, so such a large facing would be unnecessary (or,
perhaps no jazz players use crystal because nobody makes one open
enough). In either case, the numbers you cite do nothing to explain why
crystal mouthpiece facings should be so different from rubber ones. In
fact, the Selmer HS* used to be available in crystal as well as rubber, and
the O'Brien OB* is also essentially the same.
