I have been involved with Digital Monkey (the creators of 'In The
Chair') as a tester, a clarinet playing one at that. The software
itself has grown out of a educational programme that the Adelaide
Symphony Orchestra has been using - where auditioned younger players
have the chance to come and 'work' with the orchestra, and are
mentored during a typical week of rehearsals and a concert.

Of course, running the programme only enables a handful of players to
experience the orchestra and they were looking for ways to expand it.
Enter 'In The Chair', and now those other players do have the chance
to interact with the orchestra - whenever they want and at a level
that challenges their own ability.

The backend of the software has a very clever recognition system,
which allows for different timbres and instruments to be correctly
identified, along with variations in pitch and rhythm, there are also
times when the system will find that your pitch and rhythm are correct
but your confidence level may be lacking.

Attach that to the visual side and you have this experience:

You sit in front of a computer and microphone, log on and download
your piece - say Beethoven 5. The screen is split so you can see the
music, the video of a conductor (eg. from the point of view of the
clarinettist in my case) and a block of controlling buttons.

There are several different levels for each piece, which will enable
beginner players to get just as much out of the programme as those who
want to play the actual score.

Once you hit play, the action is on. Depending on how strict you have
set the options, your pitch and rhythm may need to be somewhere around
the mark or absolutely perfect or anywhere inbetween - whatever you
feel is best!

As you play along with the orchestra, the system will give you
feedback in the form of coloured icons over the score and voice
critique so you can be told when something isn't quite working out.
Once you play your way to the end - or stop the music - you can go
back over the score and check the icons for feedback on pitch
correction, areas which need more confidence and so on.

As far as i can see (i'm a teacher and performer myself) the program
has endless possibilites - which i won't go into right now, although
i'm sure you can think of some yourself. In the next couple of weeks
i will be back into the testing so if anyone has any questions feel
free to ask here or email me direct.
