Dear Jason and ligature savy readers. Before
addressing the topic directly I need to state this
disclaimer. I am not presently offering ligatures for
sale but only to elucidate one player-designers
experience.
From 1992 thru to 2002 Michael Heinrich an
engineer-machinist and myself made and tested kevlar
and high-tech metal designs extensively. Answer to
'what is the intrinsic job of ligature, reed and
m.p'was inspired by this study. Before this we
accepted more or less what now seems folly. Example:
when and if a ligature can be designed to change, add
or take away little in respect to tone, benefits
abound. A host of other musically pertinent
questions surfaced as dynamics seemed different. No it
didn't make more right notes or inspire more and
better lasting reeds.
Please read U.S. patent 5,648,623 before concluding
about ligature design . It is listed in musical
inventions.
The future is uncertain for a design requiring such
precision in manufacture. Three major music companies
were dismissed from consideration. One offered to do
it
leaving off a major component. One simply borrowed
prototypes permanently. Another substituted cheap weak
materials. I'm not going to cheapen this all out
process by sighting endorsements. Anyone (even
company spies) are welcome to visit to try what this
process has yielded. Just don't expect this player to
drop everything to go into production. Until
influential players bridge the connection to a "Right"
company consider the above just an idea. To quote a
design manager of one musical instrument company."We
do not buy ideas". One would hope that they would
have ideas of their own.
