Howard,
the answer is in part about the material itself. If
what you really want is crystal that plays like what
you are used to by getting the nominal facing
criterion equaled, it will fall short. The thicknesses
and rail widths necessitated by crystal and modulus of
elasticity that the two materials differ in are
considerable. However they pale in contradiction to
how the facings seem to start more abruptly with
crystal. This makes that illusive dark pp that is
hoped for difficult to attain. Because crystal facings
are too often shorter than rubber, they "seem"
resistant and larger in tip opening than they really
are.
