I'm glad you had fun. That's what clarinet playing is all about right
(or any other instrument for that matter, I s'pose).

I've been a proud member of several community bands, and the last was
a wind ensemble probably not unlike the one you speak of, made up of a
lot of "professionals" in the sense that they were band store owners,
band directors, and a lot of other music-related professions.=20
Certainly the top tier of what you'd consider community band folk.

I enjoy a tough piece, but not too tough. I think it's hard to find a
balance there. In January, the Richmond Concert Band (Richmond, VA)
has a sightreading night, where people request music from the library
and we play it. Someone requested (I think it was our 1st chair
clarinetest, in fact; I sit 5th, and double Eb) Bernstein's 'Candide'.
After we were done I held up the music and told the other 1st chairs,
"let us never speak of this again". Jeez, that music was hard! They
all agreed!
