From: "Zornow, Claudia" <claudia.zornow@-----.com> Subj: [kl] New Yorker magazine letter on Rhapsody in Blue Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2005 17:25:29 -0500
The New Yorker magazine recently ran an article that mentioned
Gershwin and "Rhapsody in Blue." Here's the text of a letter
that appeared in the February 7 issue.
One of the signature examples of George Gershwin's genius,
Claudia Roth Pierpoint suggests, is the glissando clarinet
riff that opens "Rhapsody in Blue." But, since the instrumental
versions of "Rhapsody"--whether for a Whiteman-size band or for
a fuller orchestra--were the work of the arranger Ferde Grofe,
should we really credit Gershwin for that inspiring touch?

Someone who can cite a good reference should write them and give
the credit where credit is due, namely to Ross Gorman. I found a
nice item from Connie Josias in the Klarinet archives about this,
http://test.woodwind.org/Databases/Klarinet/1995/02/000095.txt,
but I don't think that qualifies as hard evidence. If someone
wants to take this on, the address is themail@-----.com, and
writers should include their name, address, and daytime phone number.
