Rebecca, for estimation purposes only, the Japanese yen (JPY) is equal
to approximately one cent. Actually, the last time I checked, the JPY
was worth just a fraction less than one cent.

Thus the adult registration fee of 16,200 JPY amounts to (very
approximately) $170 or $175 after you pay the commission.

The value of a yen varies from day-to-day. The exchange rate and the
commission are not set by law. Rather, financial institutions and
investors negotiate with each other, and then "retailers" use the
results of these negotiations to set a price at which they will offer to
do an exchange with you. At the level of an individual such as
yourself or myself, it's possible to get cheated a bit if you don't keep
your eyes open. For example, the exchange booths at airports are
notorious for taking a larger slice for themselves than a major bank or
credit card company does.

Yes, JCS is Japanese Clarinet Society.
