My mother asked me to send her a list of Beethovens works including the Opus
#, the year written and what key the music is in. I found a web site from
University of Quebec through Google and clicked on "Translate this Page" and
printed it out last night. This morning I looked through it before mailing
it off. As I scanned the page looking for works with clarinet I saw a Trio
(op. 11) for Pf, Cl, Vcl. that I don't believe I've ever heard. I noted the
tempo marking of the first movement was "Allegro idiot brilliance" and
thought "that Beethoven, what a kidder". As I went back to the begining I
saw that in fact there seemed to be idiots in almost all of Beethovens
early works. In 1797 Beethoven wrote his first violin sonata and according
to this web site, the instructions to the players in the second movement
are: "Andante idiot motor bike (the major one)".
At page 10 of 36 the program seems to catch a clue and leaves Allegro con
brilliance and Andante con moto untranslated.
