Correct, John and this is the problem in dry climates. The bore expands
while the outside doesn't, the expansion in the bore forces open the grain
of the outside and sometimes it cracks. The purpose of humidifying is to
keep humidity of the bore and the outside of the instrument as close to the
same as possible.

Another humidity question:

Doesn't the regular (daily) playing of the instrument supply "lots" of
humidity to, at least, the inside of the wood?
