We just did it last night, in QEH London.

Repeat Monday in Brussels, Tuesday Paris.

The answer to the riddle is that there is evidence that the bassethorn part
was never used in performance, and therefore not at the first performance.

That there are player markings (things like crescendos, ringed dynamics and
so on) on the clarinet but not the bassethorn parts is indicative, but not
conclusive. (After all, those markings could have come from later
performances, and not everybody pencils things into their parts -- I try to
keep that to a minimum myself.)

But there is a copyists error, three semiquaver pitches mistranscribed, in
both first clarinet and first bassethorn parts. This error in the bassethorn
part is left uncorrected, whilst the clarinet part has the correct pitches
reinstated in another hand, most likely that of the player concerned. Had it
ever been played on the bassethorn, *that* part would have been corrected
too.

Well, OK, there are some holes in that argument. How do we really *know*
that these were the parts used at the first performance, for example?

Anyhow, it was enough for me:-)
