Subj: RE: [kl] Language issues when researching Mozart?

Thank you for the explanation.

I hope you won't snicker at me --- and I'm going to borrow a friend's
computer to download pgs 6 & 7 of the fragment in order to see at least
some of the details with my own eyes --- but one idea that niggles at my
brain is whether, because of multiple languages, Mozart started to write
a German character that included an umlaut (did German use umlauts
during Mozart's day?), and then he changed his mind, but perhaps he
didn't erase (or 'smudge out') the solitary umlaut afterwards. Are the
double dots reasonably centered above the note heads, or perhaps a bit
askew, or a bit too high above the note heads? Etc.

After all, this is an 'unpublished' fragment whch was never delivered to
a copyist (?), and perhaps Mozart didn't feel the need to correct every
last detail when he was only tinkering with musical ideas.

....just a thought.... I'll be quiet now.
