No, you aren't.

It would be unkind for other subscribers not to respond when a newcomer
joins the conversation, and this is what I was trying to do. Bring a
new contributor up to date, so to speak.

Part of the problem is that oil and congealed residue will continue to
build up and migrate after you remove the papers. You may not notice
this during the first month or two, but eventually (if you oil
regularly) the sludge and gunk will accumulate and move onto the pads
and will generally gum things up.

While I've haven't had personal experience with vegetable or nut oils,
they do turn rancid eventually. You need to consider this possibility
also.

And last but not least, there is real disagreement as to whether
blackwood actually absorbs oil except in the most extreme cases. One
of the posts that you'll find in the Klarinet archives tells of a
technician of good repute (I forget the name) who soaked a few inches of
blackwood in oil for 10 or 20 years. Eventually he sliced it open and
he decided that oil had not penetrated into the wood at all.

You mentioned that the oil is gone the next day when you look into the
bore. There's a real question as to whether the oil was absorbed into
the wood, or has simply moved elsewhere, or the surface gloss has
disappeared because the oil gathered dust or polymerized or oxidized or
whatever.

All of the above depends on *how much* oil you apply each time, and how
often, and also on the initial condition of your clarinet, of course.
