Paper shims are perfectly fine for minor looseness. If the ring is VERY,
falling-off-and-rolling-across-the-floor loose, shrinking the ring is
probably better. I also have one book that recommends putting one or two
layers of CHEESECLOTH over the end of the socket and hammering the ring
over them with a rawhide mallet, then cutting away the excess. I can tell
you from experience that it works fine.
