By putting paper don't necessary mean that a clarinet will crack. It can
last for years. It's just not a proper and permanant remedy for a loose
ring. If a clarinet wants to crack it will, but proper ring tightening and
proper maintenance(i.e. correct oil, not what you buy in a music store) can
avoid a problem.
