The best device I've used by far is the humistat which there's a thread on
it at

They are $4 and work really well - last a week per filling and are easily
adjustable for humidity given off.
I much prefer them to the dampits.

This is interesting to me, since my local tech says the same thing....he
shrinks the metal
ring. What I have heard from most everyone else, is either use paper shims
(which I
have done) or humidify the wood (which I have also done, with orange peels).
But my tech has been at it for over 50 years so I imagine he has enough
experience
to know what he is talking about. Up until now he had been only one I had
heard this
from though.
