Hi again - Tony's keenness on that 2nd clt Ab to G is infectious! But
there'd be a grammatical error in the resolution: ob 1 falls to same
pitch as the 2nd clt on 34, and that would result in a
discovered/hidden octave; if 2nd clt went Ab G then F it would result
in a pure consecutive octave, both of which seem unlikely for Mozart.
So the only alternative solution (to include the drop from Ab to G at
all) is the hint Tony gave that the Ab fell to G then went back to Ab
(not printed in Camden), then we'd ask why should that one part
make that (type of) move, when the previous two bars relied on a
dynamic drop more than a harmonic bend on a held 2-bar chord for
their effect? Having found this semitone drop and liking its
momentary effect is good (if Mozart did write it!) but I'm thinking the
straight 2-bar unchanging note in all parts is the more likely. Looking
forward to Andrew Skirrow's news. With my students we'll try all
versions and see/hear which tickle the fancy. Thanks again, Colin.
