When it happened to me, one repair shop advised using a glue, and
another shop advised wrapping a thin paper around the socket (enough
paper to make the ring tight) and then pushing the ring on over the
paper.

I chose the paper approach because wood is never 100% stable, and I
didn't want the wood to tear itself apart if it needed to "let go" of
the metal ring.

The paper repair turned out to be permanent. I've never needed to do it
again.
