I'm grateful that Patrick Plunk forwarded to us the announcement of =
Emily
Bernstein's death
(http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/Klarinet/2005/01/000490.txt).

The last time I saw Emily was a June day in 1979, when we sat together =
to
receive our undergraduate diplomas. In the school orchestra I had =
played
second clarinet beside Emily. (In the recent article about her in _The
Clarinet_, I chuckled at seeing the profile photos taken from her right
side, because *that's* the view I was most accustomed to.) As a
clarinetist, I remember how awed I was by both her skill and her =
musicality.
I remember how impressed I was to hear her excitedly and knowledgeably
discuss a play she had just seen. I also remember that she took a =
difficult
non-required chemistry course to broaden her horizons, then struggled =
simply
to survive the course. When she talked about that course, she humbly =
and
ruefully admitted that its challenges had been a complete surprise to =
her.

Several years ago I heard that Emily had established herself as a studio
clarinetist in Los Angeles. I often thought of contacting her after I
returned to playing the clarinet regularly. Now Emily is gone, and I am
sad.
