If you're willing to cross the Potomac into Virginia, Peter Ferrante at
Presto Brass & Woodwinds is excellent, IMHO. He learned the trade in the
Navy band. Don't let his crummy little upstairs shop scare you off. He
sells reconditioned used instruments on consignment, too.

His prices seem average for the area. Though I do a lot of my own routine
work now, he's restored several vintage instruments for me. He's always
done a fine job. I think he's worth every dime he charges. He's honest
and he's finished minor work on a clarinet for me in just a few days,
though sometimes he's slow on big jobs. On my 1926 bass sax, which needed
massive restoration because the previous owner had dropped it, he had to
special order some parts, and farmed out the dent work to a guy who doesn't
work directly with the public. I didn't get my horn back for more than a
year, but that's a rare delay--and the work was outstanding.

The shop is in the first block off Lee Hwy. Turn off of Lee opposite the
McDonald's.
