Hi Bryan,

It won't be any surprise to members of this list to see me write that I'd
go with MIDI files every time and forget about the prerecorded tapes. MIDI
files can be slowed down and speeded up without changing the pitch and they
can be transposed into keys more suitable for the play-along instrumentalists.

MIDI files have a universal format and both SIBELIUS and FINALE, plus some
other music notation programs, will import MIDI files and allow the user to
extract a staff to be played by the instrumentalist. Then on playback you
simply mute that track (or not, as you wish) and play along. The Web is so
packed with free MIDI files of all kinds that you'll have a hard time
deciding what to choose.

You need to get started with a program which will deliver what you need
(sheet music from the MIDI files) and possibly an additional playback
program for MIDI files alone. I use a program (Master Tracks Pro 6.0) sold
by a company that went bankrupt a number of years ago, but I find it still
to be excellent. Cakewalk is also good, but I think that company also went
out of business.

My Web page for you newcomers is
http://www.csudh.edu/oliver/clarmusi/clarmusi.htm (I'll have to stop
doing that when I figure out how to make a buck from my page!)

Good luck,

Oliver
