I agree -- well, I almost agree; you could easily decide to change your reed,
for example:-) And actually, that's not a bad suggestion -- why not put the
money you might have spent on a ligature into buying some extra reeds?

I have a slightly silly story about changing reeds: I was supposed to play in
a chamber concert in a village church somewhere, and on the programme was the
Debussy Rhapsodie. And, the concert was being recorded for later broadcast.
(I think the programme also included a newish clarinet quintet by a British
composer, so perhaps that was why.)

Anyhow, during the afternoon rehearsal I found that if I was honest, my reed
really wasn't up to the job of playing the Debussy, especially the job of
playing it both for an audience and for a microphone. But there was nowhere
to find and get used to another reed -- the other players were rehearsing
something that I wasn't in, and there were no facilities in the church
itself.

So, I screwed up my courage, knocked on a random door in the village, and
explained.

"Of course, you can use our front room!" they said. "Would you like a cup of
tea after half an hour or so?"

And the performance was much better than it would otherwise have been.
