While it was common to play chalumeau/clarinet with the reed on the top of
the mouthpiece in the VERY early days, it has long been standard to play
with the reed on the lower side as we do now. However, non-musician eBay
listers, especially those selling saxophones, seem to automatically default
to the reed-up position when displaying their wares. No one knows why, but
I saw one knowledgeable seller even do it that way on purpose, and jokingly
refer to that placement as being the apparently traditional eBay manner.
