I use a flat black shoelace as a ligature. I wind it 7 times without
overlapping from bottom to top and put the end of the shoelace under the
last lap and pull. (The first wind overlaps the beginning of the lace so
it doesn't come undone at the bottom.) It tightens up, allows lateral
reed adjustment when necessary, and NEVER undid itself. I read about this
in David Pino's book. I actually find it gives me better resonance in the
lowest notes. And I get TWO per pack! Actually, I still am using the
first one I tried. Its about 20 years old too. So what could wear out? I
did think once that white shoelaces would give a brighter sound.
