The Philadelphia Orchestra doesn't have a shortage of subs/extras when =
they're needed. They also haven't generally doubled wind parts for many =
years - Ormandy was the last conductor here to do it routinely, and I =
don't remember having attended a concert since Muti's tenure began 20 =
years ago in which there were "assistants" used on the clarinet parts. =
Each section has an Associate Principal player who regularly plays =
principal parts on at least part of any given concert - or sometimes one =
plays and the other takes off for an entire program. Don Montanaro, the =
Associate Principal clarinet, is a very capable player who often plays =
principal clarinet on major works - the orchestra doesn't limit the =
Associate Principal players to concertos and overtures. The only time, =
in fact, I've seen him on the stage at the same time as Morales has been =
when there was an E-flat part - Montanaro is the orchestra's Eb player. =
Although I don't know the exact wording, there is a contractual =
requirement, I think, that a specific percentage of the Principals be =
playing for any given piece. I would guess that there's probably also =
language in the individual players' contracts to spell out how much each =
will play in a season. All things for the Personnel Director to deal =
with.

I have tickets for Thursday night's performance of this program. If =
anyone's interested in who plays, email me and I'll let you know how it =
all comes out.
