I'm not a professional, but I would think an organization like the Philadelphia
Orchestra would have enough alternates/backups/whatever you call them to cope
with the absence of one player, whether it's because that player is a soloist
on the program or because he/she got run over by a bus the night before.
Also, if this particular situation were a real problem for the orchestra, I
assume Eschenbach wouldn't have put the Tchaikovsky on the same program with
the Mozart. N'est pas?
