Subj: [kl] Ligatures and Wurlitzers

I have a box full of ligatures, yet I keep going back to the inverted
Bonade, because (1) it does the job for me, and (2) it's relatively cheap.
Michele Zukovsky (LA Phil) uses a string ligature on her Wurlitzers. During
a recent clarinet quartet rehearsal, I watched her change reeds VERY
quickly, faster than I can do with the Bonade. Years of practice, I guess.
The string stays put when she changes clarinets, too.

She does lament the fact that she cannot really play the French solo
literature on her clarinets. She played the opening of the Debussy
Rhapsodie for me. It sounded fine to me, but Michele felt that she just
didn't have the flexibility offered on the Boehm clarinet. Come to think of
it, I don't think I own a CD of a German player performing the Debussy.
