I suppose the real question is, for a performer, such as yourself, how
do YOU feel about it? When you listen to your own performance, on CD,
or other recording, do YOU prefer one way or another? Which speaks to
YOU best, and works for YOU best? We have established that the composer
preferred the smear. However, once we get past that, I think the exact
"how" does end entirely up to each individual performer, and what s/he
feels 1) sounds best in performance, 2) expresses the artistic intent of
the composer, and 3) works best for you. (No specific order implied
here; just in the sequence I thought of them) Each individual has a
specific way of performing it which works better for him/her than it
might for someone else.

If something feels/sounds wonky to you, then chances are, your audience
is going to sense your discomfort with that, as well. The main thing
is, once you decide how you want to do it, have fun with it!
