As you and others have said, many comparisons boil down to 'apples and
oranges'. Does it make sense to compare (say) the artistic value of
Three Pieces vs. one of Verdi's arias?

But.... popularity comparisons *do* make a difference to broadcasters
and recording companies and sponsors who might fund a composition or
performance.

"Meaningless" in one context may not be meaningless in another context.
It's a bit of hubris to claim that the context which concerns you is the
only context that is meaningful. :-)
