Our local station here in Seattle (KING-FM, listenable by everyone over the
internet at www.king.org) does this every year as well.

The "ranking" of the pieces as a popularity contest can be seen as an
annoying clone of the worst features of athletics - but I think has a couple
of good sides to it.

First, if you like the station and want it to stay in business, a successful
pledge drive is often helped by letting listeners know that they'll have
their favorites heard.

Second, at least one weekend a year you're guaranteed to hear 100 selections
without a repeat. IMHO, KING plays too much baroque for my taste, so I get
to hear more of the romantic potboilers I prefer.

In the end, which piece is "voted most popular" is pretty irrelevant. The
"top 100" are likely to be much the same everywhere, I'd think. Most of
those are probably pretty good listening.

A happy new year to all of you,

kjf
