I bought this box set last week and I'm really
enjoying the performances I've listened to so far. I
know a lot of people who don't seem to like Emma
Johnson's playing, but she's always struck me as a
very sensitive performer, and she always seems alive
to the tonal and rhythmic possibilities of a piece.
There was a lot of music in this set I didn't already
have on CD - including concerti by Malcolm Arnold and
Stanford, the Debussy Premiere Rapsode with orchestra,
the Baermann Adagio, the Bax Sonata and the John
Ireland Fantasy Sonata. I picked it up for 14 pounds
in the HMV sale here in London, which seemed a very
good deal to me.
Regards
Mark Cookson
PS The booklet notes say that she's sold over quarter
of a million recordings - does anyone else think
that's a huge number for a clarinettist?
