Holst intensely disliked Tchaikovsky's music. If I remember correctly (I
don't currently have access to the reference), he essentially found
Tchaikovsky's music overly sentimental.

I don't find it as such (well, ok, maybe some of it), but I can see how
Holst and others might. Especially if one sticks to the ballets.

I agree. I greatly enjoy all the pieces listed. Trying to rank them,
however, seems a bit like trying to rank flavors of ice cream. An amusing
diversion, perhaps, but hardly worth fretting excessively over.
