We're certainly at cross purposes here - one way or another.....
I do not and would not dismiss Tchaikovsky. But I think he's a much
greater figure than Rachmaninoff.
I suppose my own "baggage" is that I resent the idea that composers such
as either of these (both of whom are second rate compared to Mozart -
but then who isn't?) jump to the top of the "hit parade".
As to that dreadful Lark thing - depresses me every time I hear it. And
the Bruch is pure saccharin.=20
Perhaps I was overstating it using the pearl among swine metaphor
without some sort of smiley, but equally I think that a work such as
K622 sitting between two works of ANY other composer will stand head and
shoulders above the other two!
We're not really that far off agreement I suspect!
However my real venom is to the idea of a "hit parade" per se!=20

Yes.
Matthew, perhaps my "where I live" comment was unnecessarily sarcastic,
but I have never been able to understand why some people dismiss
Tchaikovsky. I *can* understand why some people dismiss Vaughan
Williams's music (repetitive, doesn't lead anywhere), but the
Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky?
(Heh! I know that some people don't enjoy mushrooms or salmon either.)
....anyway, I didn't mean to be abrasive; but "pearl among swine" is a
strong metaphor for music which (imo) has real value. FWIW. YMMV.
Cheers,
Ormond
