Today I received the message that the conductor of the band I play with in
Maartensdijk has got a stroke, he is in hospital now, but nobody seems to
know how serious it is. Probably however he will not return. As it is not
easy to find a substitute I will have to replace him till we got one. We
scheduled a concerto with the theme "60 years of liberation" on April 15 or
16, and started to work on it with a for this band rather heavy program with
pieces like "A bridge too far", "The longest day", "Emblem of freedom"
(which poses rhythme problems to some), "Land of hope and glory" and "Little
brown jug", a selection of songs Vera Lynn has sung, and, the hardest of
all, "Rule Brittania", as a theme with variations. If I do have to study for
this concerto and have to conduct it I am not sure I will maintain it on the
program, I consider it even with our regular conductor as too difficult for
most members of the band, and thus will digest too much rehearsal time. Of
course the list I gave above is not complete.

But let us hope the stroke was not so heavy, and was not more than a TIA,
especially for himself and his wife, of course.
