In college we were only to play the exposition of the first movement
for auditions, but solo & ensemble is something else. Perhaps you
could have him start it a phrase or two before the clarinet entrance
and play to the end?

Not that I condone not playing it in its entirety, I imagine that there
is a time limit for the competition - there always was with mine when
I was younger.

I am not sure that I helped at all, I probably just stirred up another
discussion here.
