I just finished my first listen to The Clarinet Summit (a quartet with John Carter, Alvin Batiste, Jimmy Hamilton, and David Murray), from a CD entitled Southern Bells, recorded in 1987. I was impressed--this is definitely what I would call good chamber jazz.

One piece in particular intrigued me: on the closing piece, entitled Mbizo, the bass clarinet notes were articulated in such a way that they sounded very much like and African thumb piano. Does anyone have any idea how this effect was attained?

Thanks,
David Oakley
