The oboe's A is not necessarily any better in tune than any other
instrument's. The orchestra tunes to the oboe at least in part because the
oboe is the least able to ADJUST its tuning. Thus, if the oboe is 10 cents
flat due to conditions in the hall, and EVERYBODY tunes 10 cents flat, all
will be well, except maybe for the perfect pitch folks.
