I finally decided to take some lessons, after so many years. First I
discover I've been using the alternate fingering for B and C all my life and
using the normal fingering as the alternate. I guess I do need these lessons
! Then I discover, rather delightfully, that my teacher plays 'air
clarinet'. There he is, I can see him just out the corner of my eye, hands
braced as if holding a real clarinet, fingering the notes as I do, poised
and leaning forward with me, ready for the next phrase or leap to a higher
note. It's really charming.

Is this a well known phenomenon? Perhaps there are many closet air
clarinetists out there. Maybe there ought to be World Championships in 'air
clarinet' just as there are for 'air guitarists'. Or can we usefully
practice on air clarinet to avoid annoying the neighbors?
