Don Hatfield asks whether the Stubbins or Mazzeo throat Bb mechanisms
had advantages compared to a standard clarinet.

They make the Bb just as good as when it's made with the next-to-top
trill key -- i.e., excellent. However, the added complexity has kept
them from being adopted, particularly since the note can be made
perfectly acceptable by adding fingers to increase the resonance, or
simply by blowing harder.
