George,

What a very good point. I live in Richardson, Texas...a suburb of Dallas.
Richardson is home to the U.S. corporate offices of Nortel, Ericsson and
Texas Instruments with EDS and MCI nearby. We have had 10's of thousands of
job layoffs in this small geographic area in the past three years. Over
60,000 with that number growing daily (EDS announcing 22,000 more layoffs
recently with many of these job leaving Plano, Texas)....
I'll bet that if one were to talk to many of these displaced workers, you
would have a certain percentage say that they are/were "fleeing" this area,
blaming a form of "corporate terrorism". (that's what one of my out of work
neighbors likes to call it).
A very fine local symphony orchestra, The Richardson Symphony Orchestra
(http://www.richardsonsymphony.com/v2/index.htm), conducted by the very well
known violinist and conductor, Anshel Brusilow (concert master of the
Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra for three or more decades), is in huge
financial trouble....due in large part to the corporate failures in the
area. The musicians in this orchestra have been asked to play for free many
times in the past year. The current contract talks are not going well. These
musicians will stay and fight...to a point....and then flee. Some will find
other work...outside of music. A few will find other jobs in music but out
of the area, fleeing the current local situation. Once displaced, I'm not
sure we currently have a good place in America for an artist to flee and
stay an artist.
