....and the effect of an alternate fingering is not constant for all
instruments. Thus you may want to use a certain fingering in a
situation where the next person does not --- simply because your
instrument is not identical to the other person's.

For example, the fingering book that I use (Alan Sim, 303 Clarinet
Fingerings) makes the following comment about the two B-natural
fingerings that you asked about:

"Many instruments are so regulated that the [middle-finger on tone hole]
is good for F# [top line of staff], and then the [middle-finger on tone
hole] is not so good for B; [in this situation] the [sliver fingering]
is usually best for B."

If you haven't already, you may (should?) purchase a good fingering book
that makes similar comments about most of the fingerings. As you move
up the scale, the differences between various fingerings on different
instruments become more pronounced.
