Avrahm died a number of months ago. If the publisher replied to you
recently, then the reply came from a clerk who didn't know. Avrahm
used to post on this list.

Look at "10 tips for successful practicing" on page 5. The fifth tip
is: "Try to learn as many alternate fingering combinations as you can to
help you play more fluently."

This book is an exercise book, and Mr. Galper wanted you to be aware and
comfortable with both fingerings (and to feel/hear which situations can
profit from one fingering or another). You'll notice that there are
plenty of B-naturals in the exercise that do not ask for the sliver
fingering.

In addition to one fingering being easier to play than another in
certain situations, the slight variations in pitch and timbre can be
appropriate in different situations --- again depending on the context.
