Scaramouche by Milhaud was originally for sax according to Sigurd Rascher.

In the early '70's I was working up the Milhaud for a performance, and when attending a Rascher clinic. I asked him some questions about the piece, and he told the following story:

Before WWII Rascher went down to Paris to play through the almost finished piece with Milhaud. Milhaud was dedicating the piece to Rascher. Along came the war, and Rascher managed to make it to America. After the war Rascher and Milhaud met at a party in New York, and Milhaud exclaimed: "My dear Rascher, you are ALIVE!"

Rascher was very disappointed that the piece had then came out in different versions, and HIS NAME did not get the autograph. Actually, 30 years later he was obviously MORE than just disappointed.

Knowing that Milhaud alternated years teaching in Paris and Oakland California, I tried Oakland information and Milhauds number was LISTED!! I called, and was able to speak to him and ask that question---"Was it originally written for Rascher on the sax?" His answer was: "My dear boy, it is so long ago, I just don't remember."

There is your answer!

Kurt

Wasn't this originally for piano?
