Hi, Robert,

First of all, I hope Gary Van Cott is reading and answers you. He plays a
lot of alto and will doubtless be an excellent resource.

But here I sit with a 5-yr-old June Emerson Wind Music catalog at my
elbow, and among the 20-25 alto clarinet entries (method books, pieces,
etudes, etc) are the following:

Aubert - Gigue
Fiala - Concerto in Eb
Lacome - Rigaudon
Mozart/Voxman - Adagio from Clarinet Concerto
Rabaud - Solo de concours
Schubert/Pear - Adagio from the Arpeggione Sonata
Senaillé/Gee - Introduction and Allegro Spiritoso
Weber/FRank - Concertino

And I don't know why this just popped into my head, but I think the
Vaughan Williams Six Studies in English Folk Song would be exquisite on
alto. When I bought mine a generation ago, it came supplied with a
clarinet part and a cello part. And lo! If you read the bass clef cello
part as though it were treble clef, you will have done the proper
transposition. If the cello part goes into tenor clef, that's harder.
You'd have to read baritone clef, which isn't exactly on everyone's
agenda. But it's possible to pencil in the note names if that situation
arises.

With this in mind, think of all the gorgeous cello pieces that you might
be able to exploit in this way! Among these is Schumann's Five Pieces in
Folk Style, which Howard Klug so successfully adapted for bass clarinet.
Unless there are places where range is a consideration, you should be able
to do the same for alto w/o a lot of finicking around.

BTW, Howard's arrangement of the Schumann is on his CD called Élégie, and
it's well worth owning (www.woodwindiana.com). I'm not getting a cut on
sales, just passing along some info that someone may enjoy having.

Good luck to you!
Anna
