Religious repression, mostly. They wanted to be free to practice their own
religion and not be forced to belong to the Church of England. It is most
ironic that the US government today, having abandoned the Constitutional
provision that it should "make no law regarding the establishment of
religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" should lately be
throwing roadblocks in the way of any attempt to publicly acknowledge God
at all.
