Since there have been a number of references to America and Americans in
recent discussion, I'll jump in regarding something that I have become
sensitive to. It has always been my understanding that
residents/citizens of the continents of the Americas (North, South, and
Central America) are Americans. Some of us are residents/citizens of
the United States of America, and I'm concerned that our neighbors to
the north and south on the American continents may be offended when
officials and others use the terms "America" and "American" as though
the United States is the only America and United States citizens are the
only Americans. Would it not be more accurate to use the terms "United
States" or "USA" when referring to our country? It may seem like a
small thing and a figure of speech to some, but it could be perceived as
just one more indication of more arrogance and insensitivity (naivete“?)
on our part. Don't need any more of that; we're all on this planet
 together!!

I hope this thought won't be misconstrued or be a jumping off point
regarding loyalty, etc.--that's not what it is about. I'm interested to
know what the views of neighbors of the US are on this subject (although
off topic). Also, does anyone know of any groups for amateur musicians
who have programs for international understanding through music? (On
 topic?)
 Thank you,

 Jo
